Not the post I was going to do - 28 Days

I was going to do my cricket post today, but it was taking a while so this is the substitute post. The great thing about going into work two and a half hours early is that you have time to write silly blog posts.

Cup of Costa Coffee
yes
I only have sixteen days of working here left, which is a shame as it's a lovely place to work. It's nice to go from a college where the principal didn't even know who you were, to somewhere where the principal talks to you just about every day. It's also really nice to be able to do your job, instead of being restricted to doing, well, nothing. It's nice to work with colleagues who don't spout vile hatred about whoever isn't in the office at the time, and it's nice to have a Costa Coffee on campus.

The nicest thing of all is being given the opportunity to continue working for them once I move, for a short while at least. But from the minute I arrive in the USA my first objective is to find employment, and I know it's going to be a royal pain in the arse.

This has been really difficult to plan, as employers just aren't interested while I'm currently resident in the UK, and I'm sure that most employers are going to have a look at a resume filled with UK employers and qualifications and send it on its way to the filing cabinet in the sky, as it would be a lot easier just to stick to what they know.

Then there's the fact that for 9 years I have mainly been working with European funding, and unless there's a pending takeover that I don't know about, Memphis isn't in Europe. Most of my qualifications are in the form of experience, because although it's great to work your way up to a good level, it kind of means fuck all if you decide to move country. I've also benefitted from having some good contacts and networks here, but so far none of them have agreed to move with me, so I'm kind of stuck there.

So getting a job is going to be really difficult, but adapting to the working conditions over there will be more so. I currently get 39 days paid vacation per annum, and that's nothing unusual here. We also get paid for our sick days, maternity leave, paternity leave, and most places offer flexible working hours for families. I'm not going to complain though, because in general the pay is better, and the cost of living is lower.

It's also difficult to group my skills and experience and say this is what I do, so I'm really going into this with an open mind, and to start with at least I'll do pretty much anything. Not working on phones though, i.e telesales, customer helplines etc. I just can't, I've tried it twice and lasted two hours in total. It's boring and soul destroying and seems to be where all the absolute dicks go to work.

Please step away from the keyboard sir. I have shot you once,
and I will shoot you again.
Oh, and the job search sites are really shite thesedays. They're flooded with all the stupid work from home pyramid schemes and fake ID fraud postings. I would gladly take a pay cheque to hunt down and kill the motherfuckers who post this shit, along with those who post the miracle teeth whietning/fat burning/dick growing cures all over the internet, or the arseholes who will inevitably spam this blog. Is there an internet police? Sign me up. I'd be the internet police officer who doesn't play by the rules, but gets the job done, just give me the case and I'll solve it, but don't ask any fucking questions.
